In this week’s Torah teaching, Dennis Prager examines the story of the Ten Plagues in the Book of Exodus and explains what these events were meant to teach the Egyptians, the Israelites, and the world. While the plagues helped secure the Israelites’ freedom from slavery, Dennis argues that their deeper purpose was to make clear that God is the Creator, that He rules over nature, and that there is no power greater than Him.

As Dennis explores the Torah’s account of the plagues, he discusses the conflict between God and the false gods of Egypt, the relationship between divine justice and human responsibility, and why the Torah rejects nature as the ultimate guide to morality. He also examines a striking lesson from Moses, who immediately cries out to God to end the plague of frogs, demonstrating compassion for the Egyptians even as their nation suffers for its wrongdoing.

What do the Ten Plagues reveal about God’s nature and purpose? Why does the Torah repeatedly emphasize that the world must know that God is God? And what can Moses’ compassion teach us about resisting hatred toward entire groups of people? Dennis explores these questions in a deeper look at the Exodus story and the enduring lessons of the Torah.
